This subject is suitable for anyone who is inquisitive and would like to know how the world works. Chemists look for patterns in properties and in behaviour and seek to understand not only how different substances react with each other, but also why they do so. Chemistry involves doing things as well as understanding them, so it is suitable for people who enjoy practical work. Chemistry is a facilitating subject, so students who take chemistry at A level are very well regarded by universities and employers.

Chemistry is a very demanding subject but also a very interesting one. Chemistry helps us to understand ourselves and all the substances and living things in the Universe. The course begins with introductory topics which develop basic chemistry skills such as chemical formulae and equations, chemical calculations and atomic structure. In both A Level years, the topics cover the three main areas of chemistry: physical, inorganic and organic. Modern instrumental techniques are studied at both AS and A Level, and students complete at least one practical session per week.

Assessment will be by written examination. In addition, students need to demonstrate their competence with practical skills and those who do so successfully will receive a separate Science Practical Endorsement.

Chemistry is a required subject for some degrees but it is useful for many subjects because of the wide range of skills that it will help you develop. The study of chemistry is relevant for a wide variety of careers including chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, forensics and many other science-based subjects. The knowledge and skills that you will develop are transferable across disciplines so the subject is extremely useful regardless of your future career plans.
